๐๏ธ Weeknote 2025-W13

Some random front-of-mind pieces from my week.
๐ Ran 15.9km / 309m - Another small week. Good news is that I just get an uncomfortable pressure in my knee now rather than a sharp pain. I'll continue to stretch and keep it light. It's annoying because I've been declining a lot of cool group runs lately. They might give up on me soon!
Screwed the lids tight on the kimchi for final fermentation. Can't wait to eat the stuff.
Finally ate fish n' chips from Chur in Fernhill. Took Dad and R there and we ate down at the lakefront. It lives up to it's name. Locals secret.
A client shouted us a gift card at Slow Cuts in Arrowtown. We all went out after work. Our table was chockas, and we made a good dent on it. I got the "Lamb-Burgini" lamb burger (delicious), but I also really liked the cauliflower and spinach fritters. Not so much a locals secret this one, but still recommend for a decent feed. Nice place too.
๐ฑ I re-strapped my humungous monstera with some wider jute twine so it doesn't get strangled. The aerial roots had started to stick to the wall too so I peeled them off. It really likes the post I made for it. I'm now wondering how I can start training it to go up the appex ceiling.
๐ป Started mucking around with the Gemini protocol, a bare-bones text-only alternative to the regular web. Getting it up and running is a great way to learn about networks and servers and things. I'm enjoying the tinkering. The space itself is really delightful too, with lots of bloggers about, or rather "geminauts".
๐ป Scored a Raspberry Pi 4 as an early birthday present. I just got it running this afternoon. I want to set this up as a server. Will be another fun learning project.
๐ป Also scored a desktop computer otherwise making it to the tip. Waiting on a DVI-to-HDMI adaptor to check it out, but after opening it up looks like there's 4GB RAM and a 256GB hard drive.
โ๏ธ I wired up a Shelly Plus 1 smart relay switch so I can muck around with home-automation stuff. I got it triggering via the mobile app, but I haven't got anything connected to it yet. Want to play around with the APIs, maybe build some funky local website dashboard that triggers weird things around the house.
๐น๏ธ I played more Hotline Miami. Not too much because it's bloody tough on the hands with all the rapid clicking and directional movement. Man I love it though. This might be the first game I actually ever finish. Turns out the developer Jonatan Sรถderstrรถm keeps his games relatively short to "keep them unified and to the point..." "...when I feel like I want to turn the game in a new direction I usually explore that new direction in a separate game instead." Feels like the short game length fits my attention span perfectly.
๐ป Tools
-
The Unsinkable Molly Brown Gemini server. It was hard to get running, but mainly because of the stuff outside of the server itself - setting port forwarding, generating TLS certificates, domain configurations - but once going, the server just sorts itself out. It just runs in the background, and any changes to files and folders in the base directory just get updated dynamically on my Gemini capsule. Great stuff.
-
lagrange Gemini client. I find this the nicest browser for Gemini. Once you get used to the keyboard shortcuts its quite easy to navigate around.
๐บ Watched
- The Order (2024) - Based on a true story about the rise and fall of a group of white supremecist terrorists in the 80s. It was ok, but I thought Jude Law's character was a bit over the top. Kinda just a cranky old cop for the sake of it, without the backstory.
๐ง Listening to...
- Sun Araw - On Patrol (2010) - Really chill lo-fi experimental psychedelic tunes. I love the atmosphere in this album. Track 5 - Deep Cover - is featured in the Hotline Miami game, where I first heard them.

[19:09] No site visits today. Boss wanted me to get started on a KNX spreadsheet schedule for a job. Had time to do a practice exam for my upcoming CIT certification. I didn't do great, but I knew that'd be the case as I haven't done any prep yet, and I did poorly in the areas I knew I'd struggle with. I learnt a lot just from doing it anyway. Researched some topics after to brush up. I'd like to go deeper on a few things like conductor and connector types, electricity basics, networking, cable routing and AV layouts.
Lots of smaller jobs for the week ahead, starting with one of the high-end sites tomorrow just out of town. Got my annual review tomorrow afternoon and we're all going out for a feed on Thursday evening.
My hands have been in a bit of pain lately. Arthritis? Wouldn't surprise me. It's mainly if I'm using the computer. Maybe a little nudge to do some touch typing lessons. I use a lot of hand and power tools now in this job so that may be amplifying things too.
