🗓️ Weeknote 2024-W49
2024-12-08 21:19
Some random front-of-mind pieces from my week.
This one is kind of a fortnight-note since I missed the previous week.
🩸 Health - Finally kicked the headaches. Injury and sick free at long last!
🏢 Work - 3 weeks in. Still loving it. It is such varied work. I really like wiring up devices. Pre wiring (running cables through walls and ceilings before plasterboard goes up) is the hardest part of the job. Did that on Friday and my arms were wrecked from all the drilling.
🏃 Ran 29.7km / 1,926m profile - Fun few hilly runs. Returned to a lesser known climb and decent near Skyline I really like. Was nice in the trees, but I forgot how steep it was!
🚴 Rode 12km / 448m - Got out the mountain bike and did a lap of Hot Rod. Great flowy intermediate downhill trail. Was a bit rusty, but that was expected, first DH for Summer. Chain is rubbing somewhere on lowest gear. Need to fix before going out again.
🌱 Garden is going nuts. Harvesting broad beans (the depodding, blanching and dehusking process is totally not worth it). Tomatoes getting tied up, discovered the self-germinating plants were pumpkins so I'll soon have a tunnel of green in the greenhouse again. Corn, beans and chinese cabbage seedlings taking off. New crops of rocket, mesculin and spring onion getting some size. I need to eat more of my beetroot.
🖌️ Bought a second hand printer/scanner for $20. Now I can scan my zine things and maybe actually get one done.
🖌️ Made a footstool out of used cable reels from work.
💻 Website

Minor issues - I seem to have lost some posts along the way. I think I mucked something up pushing and pulling to GitHub. Anyway I'm not pulling my hair out (I don't have enough hair to do that). I also can't for the life of me replicate the png sizes of the elevation profiles I was creating in python. Serves me right for not saving the images in the code, rather than saving the plt.show() outputs. Things changed when I moved distro and IDE.
-
I made a couple bash scripts to convert my images into the right format quicker. Considers portrait vs landscape, Android vs iPhone naming conventions, and creates thumbnails.
💻 Tools
-
insync - Using the free 7 day trial to sync OneDrive to linux so I can then move my cloud files to filen and be done with OneDrive. I tried simply downloading the folders as a zip but every download crashed near the end. Stupid Microsoft. So here I am doing it the long way.
-
Geany "The flyweight IDE" - I finally got a workspace up and running for python on Debian. I wanted something a bit more lightweight than sypder as I'm not a power-user, and Geany seems pretty good. I am using pipx to manage environments which I've never done before so took me a while to get my head around, but once the penny dropped it was all smooth sailing. I still want to just use helix text editor with marksman LSP, but you know.. small steps.
📺 Watched
-
Sugar - Really enjoyed this series. Colin Farrell is great.
-
Started watching The Penguin - A Batman TV series adaption again starring Colin Farrell. Enjoyed the first episode. Thanks Kai for the reminder this existed.
-
Lone Wolf and Cub: Baby Cart at the River Styx (1972) - Second in the Lone Wolf and Cub film series. Lots of bloodshed. I liked the moments between Ogami and the Hidari brothers. Felt like a western. An understanding of each other without many words. I enjoyed the interactions between Ogami and Sayaka too. She's clearly torn between killing and loving Ogami.
-
Joker: Folie à Deux (2024) - Not for me.
🎧 Listening to...
-
Younger Brother - The Last Days of Gravity - Really enjoying electronic, trance, synth-type music lately. Found this duo via a playlist. All I Want was the song that caught my ear first. I dig the slide-guitar-type-sounds and 80s synth and gaming vibe.
-
Nirvana - Nevermind - Still love grunge.
-
Ali Farka Toure with Ry Cooder - Talking Timbuktu - A cool collaboration where traditional African Malian music meets blues.

[07:14] Quads are feeling it from run a couple days ago. Usually how it goes. OK day 1, smashed day 2. Hoping not too much crouching today at work.
[20:36] Today was hard work. Lots of drilling. Upper body getting a good workout. No need for gym.
[20:48] To prepare images for website:
$ for file in *.jpg; do convert "$file" -resize 600 "${file%.jpg}_".jpg; done // for portrait, use 800 for landscape photos

[06:48] I finally utilised the cat6 ports around the house and moved the modem to the center of the house. Suddenly WiFi coverage is top notch.
[20:45] Can you truly just be yourself on a blog? There is a difference between my internal thoughts and what ends up on a post. As soon as I start writing I lose my train of thought, try to structure it, make it read well. Consider my audience. My thoughts aren't like that. They're a jumbled mess, neurons sparking left right and centre, words and sentences form and fade, focus moves from one thing to the next, a contortion of my environment and energy, eloquent in feel, yet nonsense on paper. From here on, I pledge less finesse, more internal brain fuckedness.
[21:34] Lone wolf and cub movie 2 - lots of bloodshed. I liked the moments between Ogami and the Hidari brothers. Felt like a western. An understanding of each other without many words. I enjoyed the interactions between Ogami and Sayaka too. She's clearly torn between killing and loving Ogami.

[15.24] Survived.

[14:38] My phone is hot and battery dropping faster than usual. What did I bugger up?
[22:24] Joker: Folie à Deux was meh, not a fan of musicals.

[20:53] Installed a TV satellite dish today. Getting quality signal was amazingly temperamental. We had a satellite finder, aligned to approximately 352°, aligning to the Optus D2 satellite. There was probably 2mm of give before losing signal completely so when we found it we tightened the hell out of all the bolts.
Working with boss tomorrow, wrapping up the job over at Cromwell. They've got Sanger Pies over there. Possibly the best lamb pie I've ever had.
I need some more @TOOLS:
- toolbelt
- precision screwdriver set
- soldering iron
- smaller snips
- knife
- ratchet set
- step drill bits

[21:30] I'm enjoying the afternoon runs from the new office. Although I've ran out at Arrowtown a million times, running from the office makes me look at it in a different light. I like to custom build a portfolio of routes that fit the type of runner I am, then I pick and choose depending how I feel on the day.
I usually look for little offshoots off the main trails to make things interesting. So far I like an 8km loop with 630m of elevation and a bit of ridge running.
I ran that today in the pouring rain. Took me just over an hour.
If I'm feeling like a grunty one I can go up Brow Peak for 1000m over 10km, or continue along the ridge for anywhere up to 30km.
There's some flat running along Arrow River, or as much tussock bashing I desire on any of the surrounding hills
Plenty of options.
My job is a bit more physical though so I'll try not to overdo it during the week.

[17:56] Wired up a control system for a lap pool cover and safety switch today, then went to the next site to get the plan for tomorrow's pre wiring on a renovation job, and the neighbour rocked up in a helicopter. Pretty cool glimpse into the lives of the rich and famous.

[06:50] This kombucha batch is particularly bitey.
